Short Story - Tale of a Kingdom
This is a short story I wrote which is recited by a wise old man to his grandsons to try and keep them from fighting with one-another. Hope you all enjoy the tale and watch out for the twist at the end.
There was once a man who lived with his four grandsons in a land long forgotten. His grandsons were young and always quarrelled with one-another. One day, he got tired of their constant bickering and thought of a way to put an end to it. He sat them down and told them a tale, a tale of a kingdom.
"There once was a king of a land long forgotten. He had four sons who were always quarrelling with one-another. He always hoped that they would rule the land together and save the land from invaders. Alas! On the day he died, the land was divided and the brothers took their own separate kingdoms. The people were saddened by the partition of the land but nevertheless, obeyed their kings' command.
"A few months later, news reached the brothers, that the eldest of them all is preparing for an invasion on the youngest's kingdom. The brothers were split but sought not to diffuse the situation by diplomacy. The others took sides and soon the war began.
"The war raged for three days before the kingdom of the youngest fell to armies of the eldest and now remained only three. Soon there was war on the kingdom of the eldest on two fronts. As the brothers fought amongst themselves, Invaders from the sea began their attack but the brothers payed no heed and before they knew it, their kingdoms had fallen into the hands of the invaders.
"The people didn't forget the brothers, but remembered them in a bad way. The bickering of the brothers, turned into hate and a once strong kingdom, fell to the blades of the invaders."
After the man concluded the story, he could imagine the change in the brothers' behaviour.
The eldest said, "So, we are the brothers in the story and you are the king?"
"Yes" The old man replied.
"Are you an actual king?" the youngest asked.
"No." The old man replied.
"Then what are you worried about?" the youngest quipped, "We will maximum-ly destroy this house!"
